An OUTDOORSmagic member is setting his sights on Everest for the
second time and hopefully, this year, he'll make it to the top.
Conan Harrod from Cheadle posts on the forum as 'Survivor', a
reference to his previous attempt on the world's highest mountain in
2003 when he broke his leg just 250 metres below the summit after
being collected by a falling American climber.
Helped by fellow members of his team and a Royal Marine expedition
who were also on the mountain, he crawled and hopped his way back
down to safety, an extraordinary undertaking at an altitude where any
sort of serious injury normally proves to be fatal.
Conan's heading back to Nepal this spring for a second crack at
Everest just a week after marrying his finance, Lindsay, who
touchingly he met through OUTDOORSmagic. The first OM wedding as far
as we know :-)
We're hoping to bring you an exclusive OM interview with our
highest-climbing member next week, but in the mean time, Conan is
raising money for Christies Against Cancer and you can make a
donation at www.justgiving.com/everest.
Note that the expedition is self-financed, so any money you choose to
donate goes directly to the Christie Hospital, the largest
single-site cancer research and treatment centre in Europe.
You can also catch up with Conan's media appearances at news.bbc.co.uk
where you can find a link to a video report on his
preparations.
You can also listen to Conan being interviewed on BBC Radio Five
Live by using the BBC's Listen
Again facility. Scroll down to 'Morning phone-in -
Wednesday'. The interview with Conan is approximately 1 hour and 15
minutes from the start of the programme - you don't have to listen to
it all, just drag the slider to around the 90 minute mark.
Watch this space for more Conan, coming soon.
Discuss this story
I know a lot of us folks go straight to the forum so I'll be honest and say I'm sticking this up to draw your attention to the article, and especially the link to Conan's charity appeal. It would be great if all the forum regulars (and to be honest anyone else - Cancer isn't fussy) could add a little bit to Conan's sponsorship funds - I'm sure he'll repay us with some pictures & an account of his successful :-) attempt this time round.

Not only did Conan/Survivor and I first meet 'virtually' via the OM site and then meet 'properly' on an OM minimeet, but our first date was also an OM minimeet, doing the English 3000s. So yes, our meeting and subsequent relationship can truly be attributed to the OM site. Thanks Jon! :-) Lindsay / Leaf
