OUTDOORSmagic Super Meet Is Go!

Clear some space in your diary for the first OUTDOORSmagic Super Meet in the Lakes complete with charity mountain rescue auction, live music, scrambling courses and mountains, lots of mountains :-)

Here's one for your diary - the weekend of 8-10 July is the date of the OUTDOORSmagic Super Meet.

Not to be confused with Whiskas Supermeat, a well known pet food, the OM Super Meet is a member-organised extravanga to be held at the Sykeside campsite at Brotherrs Water in the Lakes making it ideal for some great mountain walking and climbing in the Helvellyn and High Street areas.

It's like a normal OM meet up but more so. Not only can you meet fellow OMers and go walking, scrambling or climbing, but on the Saturday evening, there's going to be a charity auction with the proceeds going to local Lakeland mountain rescue teams as well as live music thanks to an impromptu combo of musical OM members. Oh, and beer, there will be beer as well.

Auction Details

The Saturday night auction should be the highlight of the meet. It's going to be in two parts: first, OM members can sell off unwanted kit with ten per-cent of the sale price going to mountain rescue. You can also set a reserve price.

The second part of the auction will be the sale of new or unused items donated by outdoor companies including a smattering of lightly used OM test kit. All the proceeds of this will go direct to mountain rescue and so far, star lots include an Alpkit down sleeping bag, accommodation and a meal at the Wasdale Head Inn and a signed first impression of 'Ascent of Everest' by Sir John Hunt, 1953.

In addition, Barclays Bank - thanks to some behind the scene persuasion by Stu Thomas, an OMer and banker - has agreed to match pound for pound, all funds raised, which will effectively double the amount raised. The money raised will go to Wasdale and Patterdale Mountain Rescue Teams.

If you want to auction any of your kit, then please e-mail Dave Mycroft with details of what you want to sell, condition any reserve you want to set.

Scrambling Courses

Also running during the weekend are two OM member organised scrambling courses with qualified instruction, again for details contact Dave above.

We're hoping to get a big attendance for this very worthwhile event, so make a note in your diary and we hope to see you there. More details soon or check out the forum thread below.

Discuss this story

After much discussion the idea of a meet with a difference is taking shape.
The idea is to try and sort out a meet with something for everyone, from walking to scrambling and climbing, and some extra attractions for the evening.

It'd be great if we could make this the biggest meet in the history of OM, and a great way for newbies to come along to a meet and not feel so nervous at being amongst old hands.

The big difference between this meet and normal meets would be the Saturday evening. The plan is to hold an auction in aid of mountain rescue teams, where people can sell their excess/unwanted kit and raise money for a good cause at the same time. Put simply you bring your unwanted gear along and decide what the minimum amount you want for it is. Then in the evening all the gear is auctioned off. 10% of the final auction price would go to mountain rescue with the balance going to the seller.

It's amazing how much excess kit we all have hiding unused in cupboards/garages etc. Selling the kit this way would raise the seller a bit of extra cash, give a boost to the MRTs and also give newbies to the outdoors the chance to pick up good gear at bargain prices. In addition to the second hand gear for sale Outdoors magic would also be putting up items that have been sent in for testing and review - meaning new gear at bargain prices with 100% of the money from these items going to the MRT.

Also on the Saturday evening there could be a slide show/lecture on a walking/mountaineering theme.

At the moment the best weekend seems to be July 8-10th. The venue would have to be somewhere with enough space to accomodate 40+ people camping and have a bunkhouse alternative available. From initial research Sykeside at Brotherswater seems ideal with a large site, a bunkhouse (somewhere to keep auction gear under lock and ke during the day) and even B&B available. The location is also ideal with walks like Fairfield, High Street and Helvellyn all easily accessible as well as scrambling classics like Pinnacle Ridge on St Sunday Crag.

To make the Supermeet a reality we need to know if the idea, location and dates are suit people so if you're interested please give your opinion. We also need an idea of any people willing and able to help organise the weekend.

With the number of stunning photos in the OM Gallery maybe one or two of the photographers would like to donate a limited edition signed print of their photos for the auction ?

Count me for that one Dave, I will also be available to help out in the organisation, possibly on the financial side??

Are you going to put up a list of the gear that OM will be "donating"
