Park And Ride For Snowdonia?

A new initiative for Snowdonia aimed at improving local transport networks is under discussion now.

Opportunist parking in rocky laybys on the Llanberis Pass could be replaced by park and ride schemes if a new initiative succeeds.

The Green Key Strategy is a local government initiative for Snowdonia which seeks to develop local businesses, including tourism, by creating - and we quote - 'a network of efficient, flexible and integrated transport alternatives to car travel throughout the area'.

It's in its initial consultation stages, with locals being given the chance to put their views forward with the first meeting having been held in Capel Curig last Monday 14 January. According to a news story on the BMC site, the debate was heated with residents in favour of an improved local transport system, but also anxious not to see public parking spaces in the area closed.

The meeting was the first of seven to be held this month - see here for details of others - which give locals the chance to find out what's going on. You can also download the strategy document from the local government web site here along with a response form and e-mail contact details.

Meanwhile, the BMC has asked that a 'users focus group' be set up to represent the views of outdoors people and tourists as part of the consultation process.

The deadline for comment is 8 February.

Comment Anyone who's tried to start a walk from Pen y Pas at the foot of Snowdon on a busy summer weekend will appreciate the need for a better local transport strategy. The car park fills up rapidly and while there is public transport, it's not frequent enough to meet demand.

On the face of it this looks like a great thing - sustainable transport etc, blah, blah, local economy, but there are, apparently two major issues:

1. What about people (locals) who just want to roll up, go bouldering or running for a couple of hours then pack up and go home. Will any sort of park and ride work for them and, if not, will parking spaces still be retained?

2. What sort of businesses are likely to develop as a result of this? Are we looking at an economically useful but culturally dead Snowdonian Disneyworld with added mountains?

Any locals care to comment?

Surelt all it would do is reduce congestion from Pen-y-Pass, and put it somewhere else. Now if that other place is suitably placed to deal with added traffic, and has a big massive car park, then as long as the buses are big enough for everybody waiting, and regular enough so people don't wait around for too long, and they get to p-y-p quick enough, then it could be good. It would be terrible for the cafe which is there, but they'll still get people who come off Snowdon coming in, so I reckon that with due consideration, it could work.

I don't know enough about the specifics, will try to find out and get back. Apparently the locals are worried about an influx of MickyD-type outlets and their own access to the crags. Where do you put all the cars which park along the A5 under Tryfan for example?
