Pete Eats Llanberis

The best outdoors caff in the universe has embarked on a massive expansion plan and it doesn't just mean bigger chip butties. Here's a snek preview of what's on the menu at Pete's

Pete's Eats, the best caff in Snowdonia, and possibly the universe, has embarked on an expansion plan of Napoleonic proportions.

Not only is the cafe itself being overhauled with a new, state of the art kitchen planned to service tens of thousands of walkers, climbers and normal people who live locally, but there's a load more besides and the work is already well underway.

We were given a sneak preview by Pete himself and believe us, things upstairs are happening on a large scale. On the first floor, directly above the cafe, there's going to be a big information resource complete with a computerised database and maps library, plus comfy sofas, coffee and tea facilities and more.

Not only will local groups be able to supply information about what's on in Snowdonia, but more ambitiously, Pete plans a worldwide information resource, with trip reports being brought back to Llanberis High Street from all over the world. There will also be a comprehensive library of international maps for ambitious trip planning afternoons.

As the rain hammered down outside, Pete explained the reasoning behind the project. 'It is,' he says 'a service to the Llanberis community, it's not a commercial thing. No-one in this town is here for the money.'

Upstairs again a huge, self-contained flat capable of sleeping 12 is underway. The idea is that it will be let to instructors and their groups and, again, help to keep Llanberis on the outdoor map.

It's an ambitious project, but it's already well underway and looks great. Scheduled finishing date for the work is this summer, so watch this space.

Oh, one last thing, the cafe has its own website - www.petes-eats.co.uk and the inspired eat@petes-eats.co.uk e-mail address - like the project upstairs, it's still under development, but there's already an online new climbing routes facility. Looks like the best outdoors caff in the world is about to get even better.

My attention was brought to this . It looks like the ill-fated bistro has nearly brought upon the demise of what must surely be one the most profitable walking cafe's ever.

I noticed the bistro open and then close again relatively soon afterwards. I had no idea the plans were so significant and risky to the cafe.

I try to get to Pete's Eat's (i.e. the cafe not the bistro) each visit I make to Llanberis and the thought of it no longer being there would be a major disappointment to me.

'....Pete explained the reasoning behind the project. 'It is,' he says 'a service to the Llanberis community, it's not a commercial thing. No-one in this town is here for the money.'

Now I'm quite happy to be fed giant platesful of wholesome stodge at Pete's, but I draw the line at being fed bullshit.

So, what's he saying? That individuals of the mountaineering, hill walking persuasion could if it pleases them bung a few quid his way to help him out? Is he looking for investors, partners or merely donations? What is soft financing, anyway?

Just asking.
