Pledge A Pound To Wasdale MRT

We all hope we'll never need them but we're all glad they're around ... Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team ask you to pledge a pound to support them, and be in with a chance of winning a weekend in the Lakes.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team is trying to raise £18,000 this year to replace vital equipment and contribute to running costs. To get started, they've set up a Pledge a Pound website where - surprise, surprise - you can pledge a pound to help support their work. Payments can be made instantly using a Paypal account, credit or debit card, and all funds go directly to Wasdale MRT. What's more, you could win a weekend for two at the Wasdale Head Inn if your name comes out of the hat at the end of the campaign. So, you have the chance of a free weekend's walking and, more importantly, you're doing your bit for the Mountain Rescue at the same time. Sounds good to us.

Donate to Wasdale MRT

Wasdale MRT, and Mountain Rescue Teams in general, depend entirely on charitable donations - quite a challenge given that Wasdale MRT's operational costs average £15,000 per year. So, put your hands in your pockets folks and give them a hand.

As well as paying operational costs, the money raised will go towards replacing the team's aging Propaq. Now, we'll admit that we're more clued up on our soft shells and waterproofs than on rescue equipment. However, those in the know about all things medical tell us that this is a device for measuring oxygen levels in the blood, blood pressure, pulse rate, and for generally keeping an eye on a casualty while (s)he's being brought down off the mountain. Sounds handy, although the catch is that a new one costs £15,000 to £18,000. Ouch!

If you want to help send a Propaq Wasdale MRT's way, there's a full weekend of fundraising activities taking place from 21st - 23rd July as well as the donate a pound campaign. You can camp for free next door to the hotel or Barn Door shop and empty your pockets at some of the following events:

  • the beer festival
  • the Lingmell Dash Fell Race
  • the Wastwater Challenge, with Charles Potter attempting to become the first person to swim the length of the lake underwater
  • simulated rescues
  • an exhibition stand where you can try your hand at putting together a stretcher faster than the Mountain Rescue Team
  • Kern Knotts Auction
  • probably plenty of things we've missed!
If you want to enter the fell race, it's being organised by Jenny Frazer (019467 25799) and Tim Brooks (019467 26261) and the start time is 2.00 p.m. on Saturday 22nd. It is a Fell Runners Association Title Race and should be well supported by runners from all over the north of England.

See a full itinerary for the weekend on the Wasdale Mountain Rescue website. So far, the 'donate a pound' campaign has made £634.56 for the team ... and counting. Don't put it off too long though, as the site will close after the fundraising weekend.

Thanks for the article Jon , very much appreciated :)

Thought I would fill everyone in on what's happening on the weekend.

First things first , what is it all about?

Well the Kern Knotts fundraising weekend is a bi-annual event that we organise in order to raise much needed funds for the Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team. All the events will be aimed at this and all the money raised will go direct to the team

Where is it?

The weekend is held in a marquee at the side of the Wasdale Head Inn. There is plenty of parking, plenty of camping and loads of hotels and B&B's. For more information on the area visit The WasdaleWeb

Finaly the important bit - What is going on?

Well lots ! the weekend events start of Friday night when there will be a live band playing in the Marquee and a chance to meet some of the team, have a look at the kit we use and need to replace and get some back ground.

Saturday is the main event and will comprise of :

A shop and mrt display in the marquee. The shop will be selling outdoor gear kindly donated to us, everything is donated so 100% of the gear goes to the team.

There will be a flight simulator next to the marquee for those wishing to get a feel for the low flying jets that you see in the lakes, again donations to use and all funds go to the team

There will be a treasure hunt laid out around the valley with prizes for the people who get the most checkpoints done in the shortest time.

11.00am is the annual Lingmell Dash fell race. A listed event which sees fell runners going to the summit of Lingmell and back to the marquee. Prizes for all classes, entries on the the day very welcome.

Afternoon will see a dog handlig display and surgery for behavoir from some tame dog handlers !

A RAF Seaking helicopter is planned to make a visit and pop in to say hello ! so get your cameras ready

The evening sees the main event an auction of outdoor equipment in the marquee followed by more live music and a disco if time permits.

I think thats about it? any questions please do email me

Oh and a final scrounge, if anyone knows of anyone who has any kit lying around that they dont need, new or used then please give them a poke to send it to us to sell in the shop or auction.

We can normaly sell most things as long as they are in good order and have sold everything from footbeds, to bikes and alpine courses in the past auctions. The shop during the day has seen honey, socks and hats being sold , so if you can please do help.

If you do have any kit that we can use then please email me for details, either through the site or on info@wmrt.co.uk
