Ever got really bored with hillwalking and climbing then stumbled
across a bunch of extreme athletes toting ironing boards and wondered
whether you could hack it?
Or asked one too many stupid questions instead of a proper
introduction? Well, the great thing about extreme ironing is that all
you need is an ironing board and an iron and great tracts of the
outdoors are open to you.
Since extreme ironing surfaced just a few short years ago,
millions of enthusiasts have tried this fantastic sport that demands
no technical competence from its participants. And as a bonus, you'll
soon have the best pressed outdoors gear in the UK - this is the new
sport of the 21st Century and now it even has its own world
championships. (That's enough ghastly, clichéd
brochure-speak for now. Ed.)
No, but really, there is now an Extreme Ironing World
Championships. The German exponents of this frankly ludicrous sport
have ear-marked a weekend in September 'to find out which country and
which person is the best of all, and to organize the 1st World
Championship in Extreme Ironing'.
For a mere 20 Euros you can enter and pitch your board against the
best in the world. What does it entail?
'Extreme Ironing... ' say the German section 'calls on you to take
your iron and your board to extreme places to iron your clothes
there. That can happen on a mountain, in a forrest, in lakes, rivers,
etc, on crowded public places or wherever you like. There is no
limit.'
Entry is a mere 20 Euros including a tee-shirt and introductory
drink, venue is Bavaria and spectators also need to register so that
the hosts know how much beer to get in...
And who started this ridiculous sport? Us Brits of course, see our
previous article below.
