Radio 4 Climbs Helvellyn

Ever wondered what it's like being a fell top assessor in the Lakes? Here's the answer...

If you've got 20 minutes or so to spare then there's an interesting episode of Radio 4's Open Country playing on BBC iPlayer with the presenter heading up Helvellyn with one of the Weatherline felltop assessors.

Striding Edge in winter conditions

The episode was originally broadcast last weekend - Saturday 26 January - in the wake of the two fatal accidents on the mountain and makes interesting listening with the presenter seemingly astonished by the nastiness of the weather. Some sound advice in there as well, particularly if you're a newcomer to winter walking with input from the Patterdale MRT leader and the fell-top assessor.

Interestingly the ex-marine fell-top assessor reckons he can climb to the summit of the mountain in an hour if he pushes it. Don't try that at home, kids ;-)

You can find the programme on BBC iPlayer at www.bbc.co.uk.
