Just in case you're not a Grauniad, erm, sorry, Guardian reader,
you might like to note that the paper has been carrying extended
extracts from Araon Ralston's forthcoming book, 'Between A Rock And A
Hard Place' for the last three days.
Ralston, in case you've missed the media furore, is the American
climber who became trapped when a boulder rolled onto his arm and who
eventually escaped with his life by amputating his own arm with a
knife.
The final
extract, published today, is astonishing as Ralston describes how
he undergoes a 'Eureka' moment and realises that by breaking the
bones of his forearm, he'll be able to saw through the remaining soft
tissue and free himself.
It's extraordinary, mesmerising and horrifying reading as he
describes how he opens up his own arm and meticulously identifies the
different blood vessels, nerves and tendons before sawing through
them in a carefully premeditated order to minimise blood loss.
The first
and second
extracts from the book were published on Monday and Tuesday of this
week in G2 and you can find them at the Guardian web site
www.guardian.co.uk.
Aron Ralston's book, 'Between A Rock And A Hard Place', is
published in hardback the UK on October 4 by Simon and Schuster at
£14.99. We have a review copy already, but the review's
embargoed until publication, so watch this space.
