Rambler Baiter Goes Down For Manslaughter

Millionaire Nicholas van Hoogstraten, who has been involved in a protracted battle with the Ramblers over a blocked path, has been found guilty of manslaughter

Nicolas van Hoogstraten, the bete noire of the Ramblers Association, has been found guilty of manslaughter.

The Ramblers have been engaged in a protracted battle with the millionaire over the blocking of a footpath running through the grounds of his house near Uckfield in East Sussex. The most recent episode in the saga saw the RA take Sussex County Council to court over their failure to remove obstructions to the path. Despite losing, the Ramblers have been given leave to appeal.

Hoogstraten's campaign against the Ramblers included some rather eccentric pronouncements - see links to previous articles below - including an assertion that they are 'a bunch of disenfranchised perverts' and 'You ask any policeman, he'll tell you. They're what we call the dirty mac brigade. Flashers. Very few decent upright citizens, people who pay their rates, taxes, and have a house they own are anything to do with the Ramblers Association.'

More soberingly, at the time the deputy leader of East Sussex county council is said to have told the Independent that his officers were 'frightened to death' of van Hoogstraten.

The millionaire has not yet been sentenced, but it seems likely that the legal battle over the path will be the last thing on his mind right now.

I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say how sad I am that things have come to this, erm, not. Framed by the Ramblers Association?

Bearing in mind he called Ramblers 'scum', he's probably a hero over on BM (JOKE). If you have to be a nasty piece of work like him to become a millionaire, I think I'll give up trying.

I gave up ages ago... He's not very popular on BM either, though there was one tongue in cheek tribute to his anti-rambler tendencies. And no, it wasn't me.

What did they say on the radio? Sentencing postponed until pyschiatric reports completed? I'm really suprised at that, going by his past behevaiour. Really. Totally.
Posted: 22/07/2002 17:57

Given his history...I think he's a great chap...just misunderstood!
Posted: 22/07/2002 18:05

He sets up a deal whereby someone is murdered, the two 'lowlife nobodies' get done for murder, he gets the much lesser sentence of manslaughter? I wonder whose bank balance took a turn for the better?
Posted: 22/07/2002 21:52

I don't think his bank balance (£500 million at the last estimate) is gonna be bothered by it at all...

Someone in the judicial system has just hit the jackpot!
Posted: 22/07/2002 23:30

Now then that is a little unfair please add the words allegedly to the last post! Anyway it is very wierd even if allegedly he paid the "hitmen" to take the sentence!
