The members of the Ramblers' Association have named Cumbria
and the Lake District as the best walking destination in the UK,
which may surprise those who associate rambling with low level
bimbling...
The poll was conducted across the 140,000-strong membership of the
association who apparently chose the area because of its combination
of over 200 peaks along with gentler routes along lake shores, down
valleys and through forests.
Unsurprisingly the Cumbria Tourist Board is thrilled to bits.
'We're over the moon,' commented Sheona Southern, their not very aptly named marketing
director, or rather didn't. In fact she said:
"The award is great news for Cumbria and the Lake District. We are
one of the UK's leading outdoor activity destinations and this
recognition demonstrates the nation's increasing passion for walking
in an inspirational and varied landscape like Cumbria."
Festival Dates
Coincidentally, there are two upcoming festivals due later this
year. The Ulverston Walking Festival between April 1 and
April 10 based in the ancient market town and birthplace of
Stan Laurel, which has a famous Hoad monument high on a hillside
overlooking Morecambe Bay.
Meanwhile, the first ever Ullswater Walking Festival takes
place between 12 and 13 May - set in one of the most
dramatic areas of the Lake District - above - it involves a
series of walks including the famous Aira Force waterfall beloved by
Wordsworth, nearby Helvellyn (3,116ft) and many
more.
