Ramblers Rage At Ridgeway 4x4 Menace

The Ramblers Association is pressing for the Ridgeway trail to be totally closed to 'non-essential four-wheel drive vehicles and motorbikes'

The Ramblers are hitting out at recreational four-wheel drive vehicles which they say are 'destroying ancient tracks'.

In an article in the current issue of the Assocaition's magazine and featured on their web site, Ridgeway walker Christopher Sparrow says that 'any parts of this ancient route have been gouged into deep ruts which fill with water in wet weather and the path surface has been churned by tyres into thick mud that is almost as sticky as glue.'

The ancient trail was the subject of a voluntary Code of Respect, however the local Friends of the Ridgeway group has now withdrawn their support for the code and its chairman, Chris Brasher, has called for 'a tougher code that would ban non-essential vehicles from destroying this national trail.'

Why Ban recretional 4x4's as most damage I see is caused by agricutural and forestry vehiles that will not be baned!
4x4 users pay road tax, insurance and people to look after there vehicles, quite oftern at a larger cost than walkers, they also contribute to the local income when staying away from there local area.
I admit there are bad as well as good 4x4 owners the same goes for mountain bikers horse riders and walkers.
There is several 'emergancy' support groups of 4x4 owners who help in bad weather and other times of need, who if they did'nt drive at other times would not be available when needed.
try reading some of the reports on byway usage pas and present, it details how wagons where stuck in mud for days in the past and how considerate modern usage keeps the ways open to all.
Final passing shot as a 4x4 owner I have been on working days clearing rights of way never yet seen a Rambler only heard comments I pay my tax why should I clear the paths!
