Ten ' renegade road signs'
have popped up in the Lake
District as part of a campaign to position the area as the
Adventure Capital of the
UK by 2012.
The signs were - temporarily - placed in a variety of high profile
spots across the Lakes with the aim of showcasing the wide variety of
activities and scenery on offer. Chosen spots included Striding Edge,
the mountain bike trail centre at Whinlatter, the Via Ferrata at
Honister and on High Street.
Top climber Leo Houlding, who apparently is the Lake District's
'ambassador of adventure' helped put the signs in place and had this to
say:
"All of us obey road signs on a daily basis and these signs of
adventure are about reminding people what they can do in Cumbria's
higher, wilder places. We want to encourage people to come to the
Adventure Capital of the UK and an embrace our landscape because it's
good for mind, body and spirit."
Like we said, the signs are temporary, so don't go spitting your tea
across your keyboard just yet, though Cumbria Tourism says it 'll be
working to see if we can find some permanent homes for these signs.'
Outdoor War?
Amusingly, the current, self-appointed Outdoors Capital of the UK is
Fort William - the town even has the web site www.outdoorcapital.co.uk
and we're not expecting the rugged Scots to take this lying down, so
watch this space...
