Rescues - Walkers Blamed

News stories suggest a rise in mountain rescue call-outs is due mainly to badly prepared walkers.

Mountain Rescue is popping up all over the BBC this morning with BBC News running a story saying that rescue teams across the UK are 'experiencing one of their busiest years amid a surge in calls from inexperienced walkers'.

The article claims that some rescue teams are being called out three times a week to 'help ramblers who have forgotten a map'.

The article says that call-outs in the Lakes have risen by 22% and in North Wales by 25% with the Mountain Rescue Council planning to discuss the issue with national park authorities and 'mountaineering groups', presumably the BMC and The Ramblers.

A spokesman for Keswick MRT is quoted in the article as saying that many call outs are to people who have simply got the basics wrong:

A lot of the call-outs I'm getting are from people who could, to be honest, be much better prepared and could take a bit of responsibility for their own safety. They could be finding their own way off without needing us, who are actually an emergency service."

Mountain Rescue, as you're almost certainly aware, is funded completely by fund-raising and, aside from helicopter recues, carried out by volunteers.

One good way of getting involved is to join Basecamp, the National Supporters' Group for Mountain Rescue England and Wales.

I have to agree with the Keswick MRT spokesman. We all have to take responsibility for our own actions. Make sure you are properly equipped and prepared when you go out on the hills.

Personally I could never imagine setting out without my map of the area I am going to and a compass. Proper clothing, food and drink for the day. Last but not least a head torch and spare batteries if things do go badly and I get benighted. These are the bare minimum and I would never go on the hills without them.

I suppose educating the majority of occasional walkers into thinking about the things that could go wrong and the minimum equipment they need to take with them is the hardest thing to do.

I have often wondered why the owners of the car parks in walking areas do not have information like this on their noticeboards. There always seems to be information about the attractions and wildlife in the area. Why not safety warnings as well?

Can I just add a whistle - esp if you're on your own? So light, but can save a life.

Let's just ban walkers completely, then MRT won't have to get called out at all. Sound like a plan?
