Rockface Back This Sunday!

The implausible but strangely addictive Scottish mountain rescue drama is back, plus one of its main stars has become a committed climber himself...

Great news for all you Rockface addicts out there, the Glentunnock - yes, we know it's not really Glentunnock but so what - Mountain Rescue Team returns to our screens later this month for a second series.

The lovely Annie - climbing burd, ya gotta love them, and bleurks too of course
The new series starts on BBC One on Sunday 25 May, which is, of course, next Sunday, so make sure you're off the hill early or simply set the video for 5.45 pm.

Regular OMers will know that we regard Rockface as the seminal mountain rescue drama and awarded it a prestigious, erm, award last year in recognition of its improbable plot lines, absurd characterisation and frankly, overall implausibility. Remember the monk who held two falling men with his bare and bleeding hands? How could you forget?

So what's new? Well, apparently 'too handsome for his own good' Jamie decides to court the lovely Caroline and thinks hard about returning to medical school. More interestingly, apparently the latest series has been filmed in higher, more extreme locations, though still in the Fort William / Ben Nevis area and some of the actors have got more and more into the mountains - 'no free-climbing' though... Can't go killing your stars...

Cal MacAninch who plays Ben Craig, nearly did come a cropper for real though. Apparently Cal's become a bit of a climber and while mountaineering in Turkey, he caught a crampon point in his trousers and fell around 100 metres before his climbing partner held the fall (it says here, rather improbably).

Cal's obviously got the climbing bug big time. 'I wasn't prepared for the effect climbing would have on me,' he says. 'I felt empowered; it seemed to make sense of life.' So good for him.

More significantly though, what about his character Ben's fixation with the lovely Annie and her curly dark locks? Well, don't tell anyone, but he's been off to New Zealand for six months and is now completely over her. Yeah right, me too, when did that last happen...

Sun 25 May, 17:45 - 18:45

"The Mountain Rescue team return for a second series, minus Douglas who is recovering from his accident. A pregnant woman, a fall from a waterfall and a stray hang-glider keep the team busy."

Marvelous. Must set the video.

And as if by magic... A news story appeared.

Incidenally the BBC press release describing Cal's fall in Turkey claims he fell 100 metres before his mate held him on the rope. They were moving together, with 100 metres of rope out, sheesh...

Oh, and the mountain they were climbing was 13,000 metres high :-) (sic.)
