Schoolgirls In Uniform In Cairngorms Blunder...

A group of 39 London school girls wearing school uniform, trainers and, incredibly, bin liners, had to be rescued after becoming lost in mist in the Cairngorms yesterday.

A London girls' school has apologised after mountain rescue teams were called out to help a party of 39 inadequately equipped young girls in the Cairngroms yesterday.

The leader of Cairngorm MRT is quoted in a BBC news story as saying that: "It is one of the worst, if not the worst, cases that I have come across of a group being ill-prepared going on to the mountains."

The girls were reportedly wearing school uniforms and trainers and some were reliant on bin liners for protection from wind and rain when they became lost in mist on top of 2,500-foot Meall a' Bhuachaille.

The Cairngorms are notorious for savage weather swings and there was snow there just a week ago. Extraordinarily there was just one teacher in charge of the 39 pupils, a ratio which the MRT leader described as "completely unmanageable".

Bonkers stuff. See this BBC Scotland story for full details.

How long before the first writ lands on a desk. If the bit about the teacher turns out to be true, I can see them looking for a new post soon.

This goes into the 'you couldn't make it up' folder.

I think it was an understatement about the procedures failing. It isn't just the teacher at fault here, but the school as well(possibly).
What we aren't told is how the teacher was allowed out with 39 children in the mountains in the first place.
If there were any other teachers/adults on the trip and where were they?
What qualifications/expereince the teacher had relevant to taking a group out on the mountains?

But what amazes me is that teachers making poor judgement calls, are being put in these situations.

This sort of thing does make me mad. As it ruins it for other teachers, for the kids and threatens school trips in future.

Thats my current thoughts anyway

PS I'll excuse the rudeness of the girls to the rescue party as to being under stress from the situation.
