Scottish Peak Spared Mast Farce

Stac Pollaidh, a small but spiky Scottish mountain has been saved from a communications mast eyesore after a communications company was forced to think again.

Stac Pollaidh, a small but feisty Scottish mountain near Ullapool - map - has been spared the indignity of having a 26-foot communications mast erected on its flanks.

The mast was planned by a Berkshire-based company, 02 Airwave, and caused a public outcry with locals and walkers enraged at the insensitive nature of the site, which is within e Inverpolly Special Area of Conservation.

Instead the company intends to use an alternative site set among trees with the six-metre antenna camouflaged with timber cladding. That'll work then...

Hacked off Ullapool Jean Urquhart is quoted as saying that the incident is tyypical of southern companies assuming that the highlands are an uninhabited wilderness and they can do whatever they want: "This is a problem in the Highlands all the time. There's an assumption down south that there's nobody living here and that everything will be OK."

Well I am glad it was stopped, but intrigued that it only recently got made public. I posted about the proposal back in March. Got little response on here really.

Got a reply from the Highland Council a couple of months ago saying it was stopped too.

The thing that really annoyed me is that when I was up on Lurgainn edge on Cul Beag a few weeks ago I had full reception on my mobile (did as a test by the way). There is even a mast further round the coast already anyway.

At least the rapid response helped stop it though.

Back to the quote business -- Southerners are jealous perhaps??
