Second Accident On Pike O' Stickle

An RAF man investigating the helicopter rescue accident in Langdale earlier this week has himself fallen around 100 feet down the mountain.

Blimey, Pike O' Stickle isn't the best place to be if you're a mountain rescue person at the moment with another accident at the same spot as the one we reported the other day.

Unfortunately it seems that a member of an RAF accident investigation unit fell some 100 feet down the hillside while investigating the earlier incident and had to be airlifted to hospital where his condition is described as stable.

In the earlier incident - see link below - local rescue volunteer Pete Munford fell some 70 feet down the same mountain after the blades of the Sea King helicopter he was suspended from struck the ground. According to a BBC report, he was on the ground at the time, but released himself from his harness as the helicopter turned away and fell 70 feet down a steep slope suffering back injuries.

If you're familiar with Pike O' Stickle, you'll know that it's a steep-sided, rocky cone and would be an awkward place to fall from.

Full details from the BBC. Thanks to John Wood for tipping us off.

It would be comical if it wasn't so serious.
