Adventure film overload returns to Sheffield with a handy new web wizard in tow ...
Sheffield Adventure Film Festival is back next month with the latest round of adrenalin films, including a handful of world premiers, and - new for this year - a handy web wizard to help you manage the overload.
All you have to do is look through the programme, tick the films you want to see, and the wizard calculates which film combos you should watch and when. As there are over sixty films to choose from, it's pretty nifty.
Film highlights include climbing Canadian ice bergs, hand-jamming galore in British Columbia, a first descent of the Mekong river (trust us, it looks gnarly), a one-ski descent of a 1500m north face in the French Alps, and a bundle of other crazy-looking ventures. There should be something to suit all tastes (except the taste for a quiet life).
The Climbing Works Bouldering Comp
If the thought of spending an entire weekend glued to a cinema screen is a bit too much, there are a few more active options to keep your blood pumping. Sheffield's new bouldering wall - and the largest wall in Europe - will host an International Masters Bouldering Competition on Saturday 24th March. It could be a good chance to find out if the new venue's as good as we've heard, and of course, to wonder why your own shoulder muscles just won't behave quite the way the pros' do. Spectating/drooling is free.
Speakers
Andy Kirkpatrick, Alastair Lee, John Arran, Dave MacLeod, and Daniel Ilabaca will be on hand to entertain us with tales of their exploits on rock, ice and confectionary. Don't forget, we have tickets to give away for any of the talks on Andy Kirkpatrick's UK tour - check our competition page.
Step Outside...
... for a a quick gallop around Sheffield in the festival's own urban adventure race. Entrants have thirty minutes to visit as many control points as possible - or sixty minutes if they consider themselves among the ranks of adventure racing 'heroes' - and the highest-scoring males and females will take home some planetFear vouchers for their next gear-shopping spree.
Party, Party, Party
Well, it wouldn't be a real adventure film festival without one, would it? The place: the Workstation, next to the Showroom Cinema. The date: Saturday March 24th. The price: free with a ticket for The Climbing Works, or the stub of an adventure film ticket. Be there or, erm, drink electrolyte sports drinks elsewhere ready for a good night time run across the Peaks:-)
The Practical Stuff
The festival takes place from Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th March at the Showroom in Sheffield - the largest art house cinema in the UK outside London. Unfortunately tickets aren't available on line yet but you can check out the full programme at www.shaff.co.uk or go straight to the new web wizard to pick up your itinerary for the weekend.
Tickets cost £5.70 per film screening (£4 concessions).
