Everest hasn't been making mainstream news headlines so far this spring, but five Sherpas have become the first climbers to summit the world's highest mountain in 2009.

Everestnews.com reports that 'IMG sherpa Mingma Tenzing was first on top of Everest for 2009 at 12:25pm. Panuru (IMG), Kami Rita (AAI), Dorje and Nima Tsering (Himex) were a few minutes behind him'.

The site also reports that the five earlier fixed ropes from the South Col to the summit and cut away old fixed rope on the route, particularly on the rock steps, as part of an effort to clean up the mountain.

Meanwhile, Mounteverest.net is reporting that a British climber, David Tait, may also have summited the mountain.

As an aside, bolts appear to have been used on the mountain for the first time. According to Eric Simonson, the IMG Expedition Leader, 'guides Willie Benegas and Adrian Ballinger drilled six new 10cm Mammut stainless steel bolts up on the Yellow Band to anchor two new ropes — one for up traffic and one for down'.
