Shock As Snowdon Bought For £300,000

The highest peak in North Wales is sold to protect it from the Americans

No, not the mountain...

It's a painting of Snowdon by Thomas Girtin, an 10th Century water colourist which has been bought by the National Museum and Gallery of Wales in Cardiff for £300,000 and goes on show today.

The painting, evocatively titled 'A Grand View of Snowdon' was saved from an ignominious life in the US after culture minister Tessa Blackstone imposed an export ban last month. Girtin, who we've never heard of, was reckoned to be the only serious rival to JMW Turner, who we think we have.

And there ends the culture lesson for today. We'd like to show you what a £300,000 water colour of Snowdon looks like, but we can't find it. Sorry.
