Simpson Returning To The Eiger

Mountaineering author and climber Joe Simpson has confirmed that he is to re-attempt the North Face of the Eiger later this year

Joe Simpson is planning to return to attempt the North Face of the Eiger this September, we can almost, possibly, exclusively reveal.

Simpson's previous attempt on the legendary Nordwand is the centrepiece of his latest book The Beckoning Silence - see link to our review at the bottom of the page. That climb was abandoned due to a combination of poor weather and a fatal accident involving a team climbing above Simpson and his partner Ray Delaney, which Joe described on OUTDOORSmagic at the time (see below).

Having made the decision to give up climbing on big mountains and devote his leisure time to paragliding and, erm, golf, Simpson decided to tick one last big route before giving up for good ... the Eiger.
