Snowdon Summit Slum To Go...

Plans have been approved to replace the delightful cafe come bunker on Snowdon with a new, more sympathetic model reports the BBC

Good news for everyone who regards the bunker-like cafe on the top of Snowdon as a major mountain eyesore; plans to replace it with a more tasteful incarnation have been given the go ahead at last.

We covered the proposed plans for a new building some time ago - see links to previous articles below - but the new £7 million development should be much less obtrusive. According to the BBC: 'The new cafe will incorporate non-reflective glass, with the roof line softened to blend in with the stone at either ends, and the colour of the stone will be close to the greyness of the sky.'

The current cafe has been there for 70-odd years and was designed by the bloke behind Portmeirion, of Prisoner fame. It has been described as 'the highest slum in Britain' by Prince Charles and is effectively the top station for the Snowdon mountain railway.

More details in this BBC news story, thanks to OM member Geoffrey Neill for the tip off.

One last thought - do we need a cafe on top of Snowdon at all?

"the colour of the stone will be close to the greyness of the sky"

LOL; they obviously know it well.

DO we need a cafe? WE? Well I have lived without going into it ever, but all those tourists who use the train to go up? Maybe they do.

And maybe just one or two might get the bug to try walking up it and then one or two of those get the bug to try others....well you never know.
