Spiderman Backs Off Canary Wharf

A French buildering specialist known as 'Spiderman' bailed from Canary Wharf Tower last week after reaching the 35th floor. His spidey powers failed in the face of rain and cold.

Here's one we missed at the weekend - French climber Alain Robert backed off an attempted ascent of Canary Wharf because of cold and rain last week.

Robert, known as 'Spiderman', presumably because of his climbing exploits rather than his tights, had intended to scale the 244-metre Canary Wharf Tower. He had reached the 35th floor, using metal grooves in the structure, when according to a spokesperson for the Canary Wharf Group had to be rescued because he was 'stuck'.

He's actually already climbed the building back in 1995 as well as making ascents of numerous other buildings. At 40 he's probably old enough to know better, but then aren't we all?

Um, this Spidey seems slightly less successful at escaping injury from free-climbing than I was; since the age of 12 M. Robert has fractured his skull, pelvis, heels and elbows. He can't turn his palms upwards anymore due to prior injuries.

On Friday at Canary Wharf he wore only a black tracksuit, rock boots and some finger tape. Apparently he failed only due to the rain making the glass and steel-sided building too slippery.

You've got to admire the nutter.

AND, he's shorter than I am!
