Congratulations to Steve Perry who, on Friday 31 March completed
the first circuit of the Munros in winter under human power, a truly
remarkable achievement.
Steve's final Munro was Ben Hope, his 284th, which he climbed in
blizzard conditions. TGO's Chris Townsend who was with him on the
mountain says:
'The weather was certainly wintry with driving snow above 600
metres and a wind gusting to 50mph or more. Taking photos was
difficult and all other celebrations had to to wait until we were
back down...Steve is as skinny as a rake! But looking very fit.'
To put Steve's achievement in perspective, Martin Moran's famous
winter Munro circuit was completed with the aid of motorised
transport and allowed him to pick and choose which areas to visit
depending on conditions.
Steve had no such luxury, walking continuously from 1 December to
31 March, he was always at the mercy of the weather, and gawd knows
he had enough of that with his final day typical of an elongated and
fierce winter.

Also, while Martin Moran is a talented climber and a professional
guide, Steve is a 'mere' hillwalker without advanced technical
skills, something that was brought home to us chatting with Rab's
Neil Macadie who helped Steve tackle the Cuillin Ridge on Skye a
month or so back.
There's absolutely no doubt that it's an extraordinary achievement
and we'd like to offer Steve our congratulations on a job well done.
Right now, we suspect, he's having a well-earned rest before deciding
on his next challenge.
You can find out more about the challenge at www.winter284.co.uk,
there's also a lot of information at www.rab.uk.com
the site of his main clothing sponsors, Rab. Finally, you can support
Cancer Research UK by sponsoring Steve at www.justgiving.com/winter284,
a fitting way to show your appreciation of an epic journey.

Those following Steve's attempt to hike the first continuous winter round of the Munros will find a brief update at www.tgomagazine.co.uk - put simply he's on target to finish on Ben Hope, Friday, after a tremendous effort through some of the deepest snows seen in the Highlands for some time.
Check out his own site too at www.winter284.co.uk, or Rab's site at www.rab.uk.com.
