The cunning Swiss are planning to add one more to the number of
4,000-metre peaks in the Alps by building an artificial extension on
top of the Klein Matterhorn according to the Guardian.
Apparently the mountain, which lies adjacent to its taller namesake,
is about to be topped off with a 117-metre high pyramid made from
glass and steel to take it over the magic 4000 mark.
The mountain already has the highest cable car in Europe, so the
thinking is that the new £70 million development with its
viewing platform, restaurant, conference centre and pressurised
atmosphere to prevent altitude headaches, will hardly be a
desecration of a wild place.
And of course, it promises to raise covetted extra revenue from
tourists who'll be able to 'bag' a 4000-er without ever pulling on
their walking boots.
Unsurprisingly, the plan has drawn criticism from alpine
associations and environmentalists with Jörg Ruckriegel, of the
German Alpine Association, said: "These plans overstep the mark in
every way."
Bonkers stuff. Full story at www.guardian.co.uk

"""""" But alpine associations and environmentalists are not impressed. They have not forgotten that it was Mr Julen who once proposed blowing up the Matterhorn so that those living in its shadow would feel less lethargic. "" Maybe someone must presurized mr julen´s brain
