The Talybont Adventure Challenge is back for a second year this September, to raise money for the Guide Dogs. The challenge combines walking, cycling and kayaking, against a dramatic backdrop of Welsh scenery..

The aim of the event is to enable teams of four to six people to challenge themselves in one of the country's great wilderness areas - and most importantly, to have fun - whilst raising money for charity.

There are three stages to the course, all beginning and ending at the Guide Dogs base. The first is a walk up the major summit of Waun Rydd, the second involves cycling a 17km mountain bike course on forest tracks, and the third will see competitors taking to the water to canoe a designated course on Talybont Reservoir. All three stages must be completed within ten hours.

Participants will be provided with everything they need to successfully complete the challenge: training tips and schedules, fundraising ideas, advice and support, details of what to bring, and advice on how to get the most out of the challenge. For all this, each team will be asked to raise a minimum of £2500 plus a £60 non-refundable fee to reserve a team place. The YHA Danywenallt National Park Study Centre has been reserved for our sole use during the weekend, and has some accommodation available on site.

The event will take place on 23rd September 2006 and the complete itinerary of the day is as follows:

  1. Traverse of Waun Rydd - Leave Danywenallt Study Centre and cross the Reservoir Dam towards Craig y Fan. Following small steep grassy paths you will climb steadily to the top of Waun Rydd, crossing the summit at 762 m. An amazing descent brings you past waterfalls until you join the famous Taff Trail taking you through Talybont Forest and back to base. The total distance is 18km.
  2. Mountain Bike 17km - After the walk, there's time for a quick bowl of pasta before setting out on the 17 km mountain bike course. This route follows minor country roads to Talybont Forest, where you will climb fire roads to the top. An enjoyable descent will bring you back out onto the roads for a final climb before you join the Taff trail for a long, fun cruise back.
  3. Canoe course - Your team will canoe in rafted Canadian Canoes on the beautiful Talybont Reservoir. You will follow a designated course surrounded by breathtaking views of the Talybont Forest and Waun Rydd. (Canoe experience is not necessary as instruction will be provided).
This will be followed by a celebration meal, presentation of awards and post event party.

Note: Routes, times and activities may be altered subject to weather conditions or other hazards. In the event of changes, suitable alternatives will be provided.
