Tanks for the memory

Students recapture tank in dramatic stand-off in Wales

A runaway inflatable tank that escaped while on exercise in the Brecon Beacons has been recaptured by a group of students from Leeds University Officer Training Corps.

The students found the inflatable rubber tank - which appears terrifyingly life-like from a distance of 200 metres - cowering in a mountain gully two miles away from the spot where it had made its escape during an army training exercise last month. Ground forces, car patrols and an army helicopter had all failed to locate the tank - worth an estimated £10,000 - but eagle-eyed students spotted the escapee while on Cambrian Patrol exercise, waited for their moment and pounced on the unsuspecting decoy.

The students were basking in glory yesterday as they returned to camp: "We wrestled it to the ground, and reported it to HQ," said one student. "I felt quite sorry for it," said another, "it just looked a bit deflated".
