A party of teenage girls and their teacher were airlifted to safety after getting into difficulties in the Brecon Beacons at the weekend.

The six girls aged 16 and 17 were taking part in a Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition and became lost in the Black Mountains on Saturday afternoon. They used a mobile phone to call for help and The South Wales Search and Rescue team were called in.

They located the party after several hours of searching and an RAF helicopter was called in to evacuate the party at around midnight. It was the third rescue of the day for the team with mobile phones being used in each case.

"The girls certainly had an interesting mountaineering experience," team leader Peter Howells reportedly told the BBC.

Some girls needed rescueing at the weekend from the Black Mountains. Sounds like a busy weekend for the rescue services at the Brecon Beacons.

Should have stayed in Brum?

I might have missed it, but did anyone see if the Mountain Rescue Council had a stand at the NEC?

Sounds like they had much better things to do!

Hats off to them, that's what I say. :-)
