Remember our short about the vacancy for a felltop assessor on
Helvellyn? Well, it's hit the Telegraph now with an in-depth story
titled 'Wanted: A climber set on reaching peak of his profession'
hitting Saturday's editions of the paper.
The article focuses on the outgoing assessor Nick Chetwood, 57,
who is apparently already 'feeling a bit jealous' of his successor,
who will have to climb the 3,118ft every day regardless of conditions
and will be paid around £7 per hour.
"It may be the same mountain, but every day is completely
different. The enjoyment for me was being up in the mountains, and
being alone there. I also got a buzz from helping people who had got
lost or injured." He told the Telegraph after three winters in the
job.
Chetwood has left to become an £18,000 signalman on the
Settle to Carlisle railway. Meanwhile his colleague Pete Collins is
quoted as saying: "I still can't believe that I got the job. A few
years ago I was spending a fortune to come up to the Lake District to
go climbing. Now I get paid to do it. Whoever gets the new job will
be very lucky indeed."
It's not a picnic though, the job can be difficult and dangerous.
