Looks like Scottish mountain walking magazine TGO is up for
sale.
TGO is a part of the Scottish
Media Group - SMG - which has just announced its intentions to
sell off its newspaper and magazine interests which also include
major papers the Herald, the Sunday Herald and the Evening Times and
cracking specialist titles such as Scottish Farmer, Classic Record
Collector, Choir and Organ and Boxing News. The group bought the
titles from Caledonian Publishing in 1996.
The move is to allow SMG to concentrate on its broadcasting
interests and rumours that it was triggered by the declining number
of beards pictured in TGO are utterly untrue. Regular OM-ers will
recall that the currently hibernating Virtual Magazine Rack ran a
monthly 'beard count', an exercise which charted a savage slashing of
beard numbers and, eventually, a complete re-design including cropped
photos of editor Cameron McNeish and gear tester Chris Townsend,
which artistically eliminate their facial hair.
Magazines have a way of being bought in job-lots like old things
in the attic, so it's unlikely to mean any drastic changes for
readers. TGO costs £2.95.
For light relief we recommend a visit to cameronmcneish.com
where a Flash intro depicts the great man tottering up a hill. The
iMac-hued icons are also worth a look.
