Weekend 10/11 Feb 2001

Welcome to our regular Friday round-up of the general weather situation for the weekend plus links to specifics for all the main UK hills. For a particular area, scroll down and follow the links, which all open in a new window. Once you've read it, close the window and check out the next.

Not the best outlook this weekend, snow on Saturday, showers on Sunday but see below for more details. There are also links for web cams, conditions and avalanche forecasts where available - if there's a site we've missed, let us know and we'll add it to the next one.

Mountain Forecast

Online weather's mountain-specific forecast is definitely the best starting point on the web with an overall overview of the UK plus detailed mountain area forecasts for both now and the next three days complete with: freezing levels, hill temperatures, wind, cloudbase and visibility plus overall weather 'severity' forecast

The National Forecasts

Online Weather's Mountain Forecast for today, Friday, shows bright sunshire everywhere with temperatures of about minus 5 or 6, so it's looking good, but still loads of snow lying around on the tops. Unfortunately the weekend doesn't look so good, with snow and rain forecast both days with a humdinger of a cold snowy day on Saturday.

The Met Office promises snow on northerly hills on Satuday, scattered showers with sunny intervals in the north on Sunday with the beautiful south getting rained on.

Three-day pressure analysis animation from the Met Office shows a lovely low swinging in from the Atlantic with a pink front sweeping in over the country on Saturday. Hmmm...

Online Weather for Saturday general forecast shows nationwide precipiation (sulk), Sunday brighter in the north, still wet in the south.

Ananova's forecast says rain across northern Britain on Saturday, preceded by snow. Northern Ireland will be wet all day. South-eastern parts fair. Northern England and north Wales will have rain on Sunday. Further north it will be windy with showers. South of the rain it will be dry with sunny spells. Which is basically the opposite of everyone else's foreacast. Come on girl, get with it.

The Bottom Line Unfortunately Friday looks like the best day to be out with sun and coldness abounding. Most hill areas are going to cop snow and wind on Saturday with things being a bit less frenzied on Sunday. Dagnabbit.

In Your Pack Or On Your Back Water/windproofs, hat, gloves... decent insulation layer for stops cos it's cold out there, survival bag. Crampons and axe if you're heading up where there's snow or the prospect of meltwater seeping onto paths. The mud in the Peak might still be frozen if you're lucky.

Avalanche According to the Scottish Avalanche Information Service, recent snow and bad weather has upped the avalanche risk in most Scottish areas to 3 (considerable) with a load of fresh snow from mid-week making walkins and climb approaches arduous and hazardous and we'd guess that the new snow on Saturday isn't going to help things much. Looks like a good weekend to stick to the ridges. Check the latest forecast before heading off.

.

Climbing Updates If you have a television handy, check out page 159 on ITV's teletext service for their regularly updated climbing, er, updates including temperatures on the tops and other more general information.

The Scottish Avalanche Information Service is now running regular daily reports including climbing condition forecasts and is currently - Friday - saying that the avalanche forecast is generally considerable - but check for specific areas - cornices building and freeze-thaw cycle should be improving conditions.

WinterNet Scotland is a useful source for firsthand reports for some Scottish hill areas complete with pictures plus links to web cams - check it out.
