Three Peak Challengers causing upset
Land-managers say that challengers are causing environmental damage
People attempting the Three Peaks Challenge are causing environmental damage on the peaks of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon say the Peak managers.
For anyone who doesn't know, the Three Peaks Challenge involves ascending and descending all three peaks and being driven between them within 24 hours.
In an article published yesterday in Scotland on Sunday those responsible for the management of the peaks said that the large numbers of walkers attempting the challenge has lead to problems of mountain erosion, litter and noise pollution.
Will Boyd-Wallis, of the John Muir Trust, which purchased the summit of Ben Nevis less than two years ago, said: "Visitors to the Ben Nevis area are always welcome and very important to the local economy. However, large scale three peaks events contribute little except disruption and damage."
This sentiment was seconded by the National Trust, which owns Scafell Pike and parts of Snowdon. The turst is concerned about the number of big groups using the challenge to raise money for charity and has urged them to think of other ways in which to raise money.
