Tryfan and Cwm Idwal Open

Updated Friday Glyder Fach now open as well. Cadair Idris may be re-opened next week

Friday Update We've just heard that common sense has prevailed and Glyder Fach - which was previously closed - is now open along with Tryfan, Glyder Fawr, Y Garn and Cwm Idwal. Unlike other path openings, this covers the entire area and it's now possible to use Bristly Ridge and traverse the Glyderau down to Llyn y Cwm then up to Y Garn. Not a bad day out, though probably a busy one. See link at bottom for one route option.

We're also told that there's a possibilty that Cadair Idris may be opened up from the south side next week. More details when we have them.

More Idwal details below:

Some good news from North Wales where the Tryfan and Cwm Idwal area was opened up over the weekend.

There is open access west from Heather Terrace on Tryfan over to Cwm Idwal and on, up to Y Garn. Access is also allowed to Flyder Fawr, but not to Glyder Fach.

So, effectively, all the climbing, walking and scrambling routes on Tryfan itself are open, but you cannot continue up onto Glyder Fach either by Bristly Ridge or the scree path next to it.

For access to Glyder Fawr, you can use either the Devil's Kitchen path leading up from Cwm Idwal via Llyn y Cwm or the classic scramble on the Gribin above the Nameless Cwm, from either you can continue onto Y Garn, but no further along the ridge.

To access Glyder Fawr from Tryfan, you'd have to drop down to Llyn Bochlwyd then ascend the Gribin.

The car parks on the A5 are open and there are definitive maps on the ground showing where you can and cannot go. Click here for a map of the area.

As we reported last week, the Miners, Pyg, Watkin and Llanberis routes on Snowdon are now open, though car parks are closed so you need to either hitch or use a bus.

For further information, you can contact the Tourist Information office in Llanberis: 01286 870765 or by e-mail

Good news, but still mad. Given that Snowdonia has no foot and mouth, why is it taking so long to open up. And can anyone explain why Glyder Fawr is deemed safe for walkers and climbers, but Glyder Fach is off limits?

Has anyone told the local sheep that they can't stray from one mountain to the other a few hundred yards away?

Am I missing something breathtakingly obvious here?

Who has made these decisions? And who did they consult with? Simply calling up and asking these questions, stating that you're a journalist, may get things moving. Get muckraking, Jon!

The decisions are made by the local authority, or in this case, the local park in consultation with local landowners / tenants, viz, farmers.

One of the major problems with the re-opening programme is that it's based on an assessment of each, individual right of way in conjunction with, you guessed it, farmers... and landowners. The Ramblers are being extremely well behaved for political reasons, since they're in the process of negotiating over the open access conditions with government, landowners, local authorities and, er, conservation interests, so they don't want to rock the boat. Hence their current toothless demeanour.

The only way this thing is going to speed up is if the government enforce blanket re-openings in low-risk areas, which they are reluctant to do because the government wants to keep everybody except walkers, climbers and mountain bikers happy, and particularly farmers, since the latter obviously know something so bad about Tony Blair that he will do anything to stop it getting into the public domain. End of story. End of access.
