Alan Hinkes' mission to be the first Brit to complete all 14 of
the world's 8,000-metre plus peaks may be over by the
summer.
When we spoke to the Berghaus-sponsored climber at the Outdoor
Adventure Show in London last week, he told us that if finances
allow, he will attempt both his remaining 8,000-ers, Kangchenjunga
and Dhaulagiri, this spring.
'I don't want to think about it right now,' he said. 'I'm going to
make a final decision on 10 March. My stuff's in Nepal and ready to
go and if I can get enough loot, I'll do them both.'
For that to be possible, Hinkes would have to be helicoptered from
one mountain to the basecamp of the other. Kangchenjunga is a long
walk in to base camp and last year's attempt was ended by a bronchial
problem, however once Alan's summited the first peak, he would be
fully acclimatised and ideally placed for a fast ascent of the
other.
In the mean time, he's been spending his time ice climbing in the
Alps at Coigne, mountaineering in Scotland - before it all thawed -
and trying out the Ice Factor at Kinlochleven, which he was very impressed
with.
More details of Alan's plans as soon as we have them.
Discuss this story
Just a thought, Alan says that he needs to get the cash together to fund the two summit attempts. I wouldn't mind chipping in although it wouldn't be much, but if anyone else on the site was interested we could probably help a bit between us. What do people think? Might get a "supported by the denizens of Outdoors Magic" sticker somewhere on one of his photos
