The arrival of winter conditions saw two rescues in the Cairngorms
at the weekend.
A couple from Manchester who became lost in the area to the west
of Loch Avon on Saturday texted a friend in Aviemore who notified the
police. The couple, who did not want to be identified, were
reportedly airlifted to safety by a helicopter from RAF Kinloss in
the early hours of Sunday morning.
They apparently declined medical attention although the woman had
sprained her ankle before they became lost. A spokesman for Aviemore
Police emphasised that the couple had been extremely fortunate to get
a mobile phone signal in the area, which had enabled the rescue team
to phone them and establish their exact position. Temperatures were
expected to drop as low as minus 10 C.
"Anybody who gets lost on the Cairngorms in this weather is very
lucky to get out," said the spokesman. The combination of relatively
featureless plateau, high elevation and fierce weather makes the area
potentially extremely dangerous at any time of the year but
particularly in winter.
