Update - the missing capstone from Hope Cross (see below for story) has now been found, apparently abandoned in a parking place near Bradwell, says the National Trusts. All they need to do is borrow a yak, take it back up there and stick back on using No More Nails or whatever's appropriate. Good news.
A quick heads-up on the bizarre theft of the capstone from Hope Cross, which stands on the Roman Road above Edale.
The cross, which is 270 years old, is a stone monument marking a major path junction and is dated 1737. It's categorised as a Grade II listed building and is under the care of the National Trust.
It seems the capstone was still in place before Christmas, but disappeared some time after that. If you've ever seen it, you'll know that it's a big old chunk of stone and there's absolutely no chance that someone could have carried it off the hill manually, which suggests that it was removed using a 4x4 – the track up from the Hope/Edale road is driveable.
The area around the monument has already been searched with no sign of the missing stone. The most likely scenario is that it was removed as some sort of thoughtless prank. As you can see, it has EADLE on it in large letters on one side, so it's very recognisable...
The National Trust is understandably keen to retrieve the capstone and return it to its rightful location, and will even collect it, no questions asked. If you know anything about the disapearance or the location of the stone, call 01433 670368 and leave a message for Myles Brazil, or email him at peakdistrict@nationaltrust.org.uk
