Peak moor restoration project reaches semis of National Lottery Awards.

The Peak District's Moors for the Future project has reached the semi-finals of the National Lottery Awards 2008 and will now compete with other Lottery-finded projects across the UK to win £2000 to spend on their scheme and the opportunity to star in a special prime-time BBC1 TV show and you can vote for them.

One of only ten entries have made it through to the semi-final stage in the Best Environment Project category, Moors for the Future was set up with the aim of restoring large parts of the Peak District moors, which have been damged by 200 years of pollution and erosion.

The Edale-based partnership undertakes practical work to restore damaged moorland - reseeding fire-damaged areas for example - as well as raising awareness of the issues, encouraging responsible use of the moors and instigating research on hos best to protect and manage the moorland environment.

Peatlands store more CO2 than all the forests in the UK and France combined and could also help combat flooding by soaking up large quantities of rainfall. They are a crucial natural weapon against climate change as well as being a stunningly beautiful landscape.

Chris Dean, Moors for the Future manager, said: "A vote for us recognises the greatest environmental challenge facing the world today - climate change, and what we can do about it. We really hope people will vote for the future benefit of the whole country."

Instead of wasting lottery money on things that don't matter I vote that some of the lottery money be spent on uprating the moors.
