Walk Every Grid Square...

The latest Ramblers' Association campaign aims to walk every right of way in England and Wales, grid square by grid square, but what is going on with that fluoro graphic thang?

The latest campaign from those chirpy chaps over at the Ramblers' Association is called 'Use Your Paths' and aims to get every public right of way in England and Wales walked between Spring Equinox 2006 (20 March) and Autumn Equinox 2007 (22 September).

You don't have to walk them all yourself - duh - and you don't have to be a member of the RA either, the whole point is to tick off the country by walking every right of way in individual grid square-sized chunks.

Why? First, says the RA to raise the profile and stress the importance of the path network and second to raise awareness of local paths among all walkers and provide information on how to get path problems resolved.

How? You choose a grid square, walk all the public rights of way on it, then inform the campaign of any problems encountered using their web site at www.useyourpaths.info which also has extensive further information if you're interested in taking part. See also www.ramblers.org.

Just try not to be put off by the strange stile-climbing person in purple trackies, yellow jacket and deck shoes who appears to be in the act of stamping on a blissfully unaware songbird... See above :-)

Heh, this is a worthwhile campaign folks, we shouldn't take the mickey.

It's easy to forget the wealth of lowland paths that are underused and/or obstructed by unsypathetic landowners whilst up on the hills. Any campaign the raise public awareness of these facts should be applauded.

But if I were feeling glib, at least that strange stile-climbing person isn't wearing red socks pulled over their trousers...
