A 32-year-old man has died from his injuries after falling around 900 feet at the weekend.
Very sad news from Scotland where hillwalker David Rainey fell to
his death in Coire an t-Sneachda, one of the northern corries of the
Cairngorm range.
David Rainey, 32, from Royston in Hertfordshire was reportedly
walking with friends in the area on Saturday morning when he slipped
and fell approximately 900 feeet. He was evacuated by helicopter but
was dead on arrival at hospital.
Tragically David is the sixth person to die in mountain accidents
in Scotland this winter. Obviously very sad news and our condolences
to David's friends and family.
New Invesment In Mountain Safety
In a sad coincidence, Scottish Sports Minister Stewart Maxwell is
due to visit the area today to announce details of a new investment
package aimed at promoting safety information for mountain users.
Tim Walker, the principal of Glenmore Lodge, the Scottish winter
mountain centre, commented:
"Every incident is clearly regrettable. I think every hillwalker
and mountaineer will share a feeling of sadness."
"It's another reminder that the mountains of Scotland are
dangerous places. All of us must, in planning any excursion, always
plan within your limits.
"Always be prepared to turn back, but always use all the good
advice that is available."
He welcomed the announcement of more funding for 'innovative
information services aimed at making the mountains safer and more
accessible all year round'.
