Two poorly equipped walkers from London were lucky to survive in appalling conditions after one of them fell around 150 feet down an icy slope on Snowdon at the weekend.

It took rescue teams some 14 hours to rescue the pair in some of the worst weather of the winter after the fall close to the summit of Crib y Ddisgl, part of the classic Snowdon Horseshoe route.

"I've no idea why they were up there" commented a rescue team spokesman. "Nobody else stopped to help them because there was nobody else up there as they had all heeded the weather warnings."

Rescuers also criticised the pair's clothing and equipment, one reportedly wore only trainers while the other had light summer boots. Neither were carrying a torch or whistle to attract attention and it was only by chance that a passing park warden chanced to find them and called in rescue teams from Llanberis and the Ogwen Valley.
