Wasdale Local Calls For Three Peaks Re-think

Sleepless nights, erosion to paths, human waste behind walls mean Wasdale is taking a beating from charity challenges says a Wasdale resident

As the charity mountain challenge season reaches its summer peak, a Wasdale local has called for a look at the impact of Three Peak Challenges on the secluded Lake District valley.

Believe it or not, this is a relatively quiet day on top of
Scafell Pike. Most challenge walkers however, attempt
the mountain in the dark

Wasdale is the start of the shortest and fastest route up Scafell Pike and therefore bears the brunt of thousands of walkers attempting to climb the highest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales within 24 hours often as part of large groups raising money for charity.

Because of the logistics of the event, walkers generally arrive there in the small hours of the morning. Writing on OUTDOORSmagic, Guy Newbold gives a thought-provoking local's-eye view of the disruption and damage caused by the event.

'Wasdale is taking a beating,' he says and calls for charities to think again and look elsewhere for their funds.
