For one weekend only, there's a free cinema on top of 1254m Cairngorm, really.
Drop by and watch a film on top of 1245-metre Cairngorm this
weekend at Britain's highest ever cinema as part of to the
build-up to the Aviemore Mountain Film Festival which runs
from 17-20 May.
The specially constructed cinema tent will be set up over the
weekend of 28/29 April and will show a selection of the best
films from the AMFF 2006 as a taster for the 2007 festival.
The cinema will, it says here, be showing extreme films depicting
skiing, BASE jumping, kayaking, mountain biking and climbing,
throughout the day. Refreshments will be available and admission to
the cinema will be absolutely free, though the organisers will be
accepting donations to the festival's charity partner, Disability
Snowsport UK.
Festival Director, Dave Felce , says:
"For the past three year's we have been bringing the mountains to
the cinema by showcasing some of the best and most inspirational
films around, but this year we wanted to turn this concept on it's
head and take the films to the mountains.
"We want mountaineers, walkers, climbers, skiers, even families on
a day out, to stop by the cinema this weekend and watch some of last
year's top films. What better way to prepare yourself for the
onslaught of this year's festival?!"
Frankly, it seems like a faintly bonkers idea and we can imagine
some environmentalists muttering darkly into their hand-pulled pints,
but what the heck. It's a bit different, so if you're in the 'gorms
this weekend and fancy a rest and a cuppa while you watch a mountain
film, here's your chance.
And the rest...
This year's festival will take place from the 17th -20th May and
will showcase a range of films, lectures and workshops - most
of which are free. With highlights including a talk from members of
the RAF Grantown 2006 Greenland expedition and spectacular shows from
some of the UK's top mountain biking experts.
The weekend will culminate with the Jagermeister party - billed as
the loudest and liveliest closing party ever held by a mountain film
festival - which will feature four of the best up and coming
British bands - including Kid Ego, - Darkwater, Curzon
Circle, Sizequeen and Underbelly.
