The Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team is warning walkers to beware
hidden ice following a fatal accident involving a Cheshire man this
weekend.
A spokesman for the team is quoted on the BBC web site as saying:
"At this time of year, ice will be lurking."
He went on to emphasise that the two men involved in the accident
at the weekend had been well prepared for the route, but that while
conditions were sunny, there were still patches of ice on the
rocks.
According to the story, the victim slipped after stopping for a
rest at the top of a slanting gully and although an inquest has been
opened and adjourned, it seems likely that a patch of ice in an area
not yet reached by the sun was to blame.
The warning is particularly timely given recent forecasts
suggesting that the weather is about to take a turn for the worse
with arctic winds bringing fog, ice and snow to some areas from
Thursday onwards. See the Met Office site for more
information.
