Weekend Weather 4th-5th
October 2003
|
Our regular Friday round-up
of what's in store for the weekend. And it's hello autumn...
Or at least that's how it's supposed to be. Hot news this
week is that the Met Office is now providing mountain
weather forecasts for Wales, Snowdonia and the Beacons-
links from
this page - which we've
incorporated into our forecast links below. Thanks to OM
member Marcus Crompton for the tip.
New on the web is
Nevisport's mountain weather
forecast covering the main UK
mountain areas, updated twice a day and giving both a
general overview and a three-day outlook with useful stats
like wind speed, freezing levels and both valley and summit
temperatures. There's also a general UK forecast.
Good to see a mountain specific forecast
back at long last. Check the site for individual data.
If you're off to the
Peak District, freezing levels have dropped to just over
9,000 feet... Not that bad then.
The Met
Office
outlook for Saturday is
for things to feel distinctly cooler with showers in the
north and east. Elsewhere mainly dry with sunny spells.
Winds brisk and from the north, so highish windchill factor,
temps between about 7 on the far north of Scotland, and 12,
though cooler on the tops obviously.
Sunday wind shifting round to the
SW, sunny pretty much everywhere south of the border,
Scotland gets more cloud but with sunny spells in the east.
Dry in most places. Temperatures around 10C, so cooler than
it has been.
New
Mountain Forecasts New this week, excellent online
forecasts covering the National Park areas of
Snowdonia
and the Brecon
Beacons. Good to see the Met
Office covering mountain areas, though this appears to be an
initiative of the Wales Tourist Board and the Met Office in
Cardiff.

The BBC
Weather site uses Met Office
data, but is generally easier to follow. Streaming video
weather forecasts also available on the site.
Saturday North East Scotland gets
wind and frequent showers, some heavy with hail thunder etc
and wintry on mountains - so snow a possibility. Sunny
spells and scattered showers everywhere else though many
areas dry all day.
Sunday CStarting dry, chilly and
sunny then rain and cloud spreading southeastwards with
broken cloud, showers and strong winds in northern
areas.
Check BBC's specific areas:
Fort
William / Kendal
/ Betws-y-Coed
/ Aviemore
/ Skipton
/ Glossop
(Peak) / Brecon
/ Milton
Keynes. Eastern Scotland looks
the best bet if you want to stay dry...
Saturday's
general windy and chillier in
most areas, mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, more
frequent showers in far NW. Showers maybe wintry over
northern highlands.
Sunday
frost possible in some inland areas to begin with, many
parts dry and bright early on then cloud and rain spreading
into the NW by lunchtime and moving
southeastwards.

Wasdaleweb weather - daily
reports updated before 10 am, a local forecast and a current
pic - always worth a loook just for the piccy. - from OM
member Guy Newbold who lives and works in Wasdale. Guy's
just invented Wasdale
Web and you should be directed
there automatically from the link above.
Nice pic today and not a bad forecast for
the weekend either - possibility of light showers both days,
but we've seen worse.
New on the site, the Wasdaleweb
Webcam , though right now it's
having teething problems. Once up and running, it should be
streaming live pics of the valley.
Scottish
Avalanche Information Service -
closed for the season, roll on next winter :-) And it is...
Not long now.

OUTDOORSmagic
web cam page Links to all the UK
mountain web cams we're aware of. If there's one that we've
missed, please drop
us a line and we'll add it to the
page. Good for getting a general idea of what the snow
situation's like, if the sun is shining, whether there's
anywhere to park in Coniston etc. Check the image you're
viewing is up to date as they often seem to go down. Ho
hum...
Mainly quite dry with the odd shower.
Feeling cold in northerly winds.
Verdict Brrrrrr... Wasn't it
summer last week? Temperatures dropping and the northerly
wind on Saturday's going to make things feel distinctly
frosty with the possibility of snow over northern Scottish
mountains. Wrap up warm, don't forget hat, gloves and a
shell - it's going to feel much cooler than it has been
recently.
Craven Disclaimer Hey come on,
we all know mountain weather's unpredictable, and while the
above forecasts and links are a guide to what the weather
may do, remember that mountain areas also tend to generate
their own conditions, temperatures are much cooler up top
than in the valleys and conditions can be totally different
from down in the valleys.
