Weekend Weather Out-cook...

It's life in the sauna, or maybe the Turkish bath this weekend as Walter beckons in more heat, humidity and sunshine, but maybe with the odd thundery shower...

Weekend Weather 9th-10th August 2003

Our regular Friday round-up of what's in store for the weekend. And once again, this week we give you SCORCHIO ... See the rest of the site for some handy advice on how to survive the heat and this week's Butcher's Dog for advice on heat exhaustion and heat stroke, how to recognise the signs and what to do.

New on the web is
Nevisport's mountain weather forecast covering the main UK mountain areas, updated twice a day and giving both a general overview and a three-day outlook with useful stats like wind speed, freezing levels and both valley and summit temperatures. There's also a general UK forecast.

Good to see a mountain specific forecast back at long last. Check the site for individual data. There's also a general UK forecast. If you're off to the Peak District, you'll be relieved to learn that freezing level is just above 14,000 feet right now.

The
Met Office outlook for Saturday isPatchy rain across Northern Ireland and western Scotland. Hot and mainly sunny elsewhere. Temperatures highest in the south, but still in the low to mid 20s elsewhere. Light winds mainly from the south.

Sunday cloudy across the north and west of the British Isles, sunny in the south east and east midlands. Still warm...

The
BBC Weather site uses Met Office data, but is generally easier to follow.

Saturday Dry amd hot in England, Wales and eastern Scotland lots of sun after early mist and cloud have cleared. Northern Ireland and western Scotland cloudy though with some rain.

Sunday Wales and England still hot and humid and sometimes cloudy though still with some sun, Scotland and Northern Ireland dry with sunny spells and feeling fresher.

Pollen low risk in all areas as the grass pollen season winds down, so good news for hayfever sufferers.

Check BBC's specific areas: Fort William / Kendal / Betws-y-Coed / Aviemore / Skipton / Glossop (Peak) / Brecon / Milton Keynes. Eastern Scotland looks the best bet if you want to stay dry...

Saturday's general forecast from Online Weather? Bejing 31 C and thunderstorms - not so good. Meanwhile back in the UK, Saturday's outlook is for the odd thundery shower in western Scotland and/or Norther Ireland, rest of the UK stays hot and humid with long sunny spells.

Sunday - risk of showers or thunderstorms in northern England and Wales and southern and eastern Scotland, dry and hot with some sunshine in south, Northern Ireland and north western Scotland, dry with sunny spells.

Scotland Online Mountain Weather - Unfortunately what was a useful selection of mountain area weather forecasts seems to have ceased to exist... Oh well.

Wasdaleweb weather - daily reports updated before 10 am, a local forecast and a current pic - always worth a loook just for the piccy. - from OM member Guy Newbold who lives and works in Wasdale. Guy's just invented Wasdale Web and you should be directed there automatically from the link above, but you can still get to the Felltreks weather and pics page from there. It's obvious really, just click the link. Today's comment: 'It's not raining, but it's not bright either.'

Scottish Avalanche Information Service - closed for the season, roll on next winter :-)

OUTDOORSmagic web cam page Links to all the UK mountain web cams we're aware of. If there's one that we've missed, please drop us a line and we'll add it to the page. Good for getting a general idea of what the snow situation's like, if the sun is shining, whether there's anywhere to park in Coniston etc. Check the image you're viewing is up to date as they often seem to go down. Ho hum...
Scorchio... hot and dry mostly
... could be some rain on Sunday.

Verdict Wahey, it's going to be mostly hot, very hot, though some signs of things breaking on Sunday with the possibility of showers and maybe thunderstorms in the north. Don't forget to drink lots and get that sun cream on early - and wear a hat. L:ightweight waterproof for Sunday? Have a blinder :-) For more hot weather tips, see the rest of the site.

Craven Disclaimer Hey come on, we all know mountain weather's unpredictable, and while the above forecasts and links are a guide to what the weather may do, remember that mountain areas also tend to generate their own conditions, temperatures are much cooler up top than in the valleys and conditions can be totally different from down in the valleys.
