The National Grid has revealed plans for a new gas pipeline, supplying up to 20% of the UK’s gas, which will cut through the Brecon Beacons National Park. Although the pipeline is to be buried 1.2 metres below ground Countryside bodies have called for areas on its route to be protected.

In a statement the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority said "It almost goes without saying that we think pipelines like this should not go through national parks. "Unfortunately the legislation that protects national parks...does not preclude some development of overriding national interest. "We cannot prevent the pipeline passing through the national park [but] we will do all we can to minimise how much of it comes into the park and work hard to ensure that no lasting damage to the beauty, wildlife, cultural heritage and farming practices of this national treasure."

The National Park Authority has been joined by the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales, The Country Landowners Association and the National Farmers Union in a campaign to minimise any damage to what are described as “extremely important landscapes”.

The pipeline will run from Felindre, near Swansea, to Tirley in Gloucestershire and is designed to connect Milford Haven to the national gas network as North Sea gas runs out.

This pipeline will be going through a part of the park that's not even promoted by the NPA to protect the ecological balance.

So if the authority can't stop a development such as this why bother having them?

From what i can see the government (or whoever controls the National Grid) has always had the power to overide the NPA's, so like you say they are a waste of time, they were created to stop the general public (people like us) from doing what it wants in the national parks.

Thing is I can't see why it can't just along the M4 or A465 (esp as the A465 is in the process of extensive roadworks), wouldn't cost anymore and the distance covered would be roughly the same.

Still it might divert attention from the windfarms.

In my opinion the BBNP authority is not doing anywhere near enough to fight this.

So to the self serving memebers of the authority

Look Guys a satelite dish on A pub in Defynnog ain't an Eyesore, double glazing on a house in Talybont does not affect the local wildlife.

DO SOMETHING!!!
