Whistling Deer Spark Bogus Rescues

Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team called out by tuneful stags.

Just in case you've missed it, whistling deer in the Highlands have been making national news headlines after triggering bogus mountain rescue searches.

The deer, thought to be sika stags, apparently make the whistling noise during the mating season, which in turn seems to have been mistaken for the sound of walkers in distress sounding emergency whistles.

As a result, Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team has now been called out twice on false alarms spending a total of around eight hours searching for the non-existent walkers. Apparently the same deer are also 'known to make raspberry noises', though as yet that hasn't triggered any rescue efforts that we're aware of...
