Winter Skills A Winner

The winner of our recent Gore-Tex competition really lucked out with perfect winter conditions arriving along with his winter skills course at Plas y Brenin in Snowdonia. Jammy git ;-)

OUTDOORSmagic / Gore-Tex competition winner Chris Ward - right - couldn't have asked for better conditions for his Plas y Brenin winter skills course this weekend. No more North Wales drizzle or greeny-brown hills for him. Instead, it was white underfoot and blue overhead as he tried out ice-axe arrests on the slopes of Y Garn.

Winter skills courses can be a little unpredictable - and imaginative - in Wales in early March. If there's no snow to practice ice axe braking, no problem - participants just slide down a grassy slope on a bivvy bag. Even better, there's always the mighty peak of the Plas y Brenin artificial winter slope to practice walking on in crampons. No one complains if the climate offers a helping hand, though.

On this occasion, artificial snow was definitely superfluous to requirements, as Chris's brand new Mountain Equipment Gore-Tex jacket shielded him from snow rather than a dose of Snowdonia drizzle. Walking in crampons, cornice-spotting, and snowball fights were more than just theoretical activities for a change. The same goes for photography, with some fantastic winter landscapes begging to be snapped. Tryfan took a promotion from looking merely lofty to looking positively Alpine, as in this shot.

All that was missing to complete the effect was a French chalet or two with hot mulled wine to sip on a pine-built veranda...

We asked Chris what he'd enjoyed most about the weekend. "All of it," he replied. "Just getting out there." He told us it made a welcome break from heading down to the pub for a pint, and watching the football. And hopefully this will be the first of many winter mountaineering exploits in his up-coming calendar.

"Adventure is what I'm really about," he said, "and it would be nice to eventually start working in that area." We seem to have one happy competition winner! Big thanks to Gore-Tex, Plas y Brenin and Mountain Equipment for their part in a great weekend.

Wales was full of some of the landscapes you live to look at, and this time they weren't just on the pages of a Colin Prior calendar. The same went for most of the UK. To see more of the weekend's most snap-happy moments take a look at the OUTDOORSmagic Gallery. There's also an article dedicated to images of some of the best winter conditions in years plus there are also more of Susan's pictures from the weekend here.
