A second fatal accident in twenty-four hours

Idwal Slabs, by Stuey, from the OM gallerySome more bad news from the British hills …

A lone walker fell 700 feet from a route on Glyder Fawr yesterday (Monday). She was found dead at the foot of Idwal slabs by thirty members of the Ogwen Valley and RAF Valley Mountain Rescue Teams.

Two climbers on the slabs saw her fall, but they couldn’t raise the alert until they had topped out and descended from the Glyders. Mountain Rescue were called out at 6:30pm but it took another three hours to find the body.

A man also died in the Highlands on Monday morning - here’s the story – so all in all it’s been a bad week for the MRT and for hillwalking in the UK.

Climbing on Idwal

The Idwal slabs are a fantastic place to climb, with some cracking routes at a range of grades (and a touch of polish to show for it!) You couldn’t ask for much more dramatic scenery either.

That said, it’s climbers’ territory all the way up, with both exposure and height in its arsenal, so walkers are best off admiring it from a distance. It’s worth a pic or three too.

Unfortunately, a fall from the top is a no-go area. Full details of the accident from the beeb.
