Woman Killed In Langdale Plunge

A woman has died after falling into a ravine in the Langdale Pikes area of the Lake District

A 43-year old woman was killed after slipping on a path in the Langdale area of the Lake District on Saturday reports the BBC.

The woman was apparently with a party of friends on the path running down below Loft Crag towards the New Dungeon Ghyll hotel when she slipped and plunged an estimated 200 metres suffering serious head injuries in the process.

A helicopter was scrambled, but she 'died just as the rescue team reached the group' say the BBC. The path, which the group appear to have been using, is a popular way down to the road from the dip between Harrison Stickle and Pike of Stickle.

We used what seems from the description to be the same path on an Easter backpacking trip at the beginning of this month (see above) and while it's straightforward, non-technical walking the upper section is very exposed with steep slopes falling away into a ravine. It's one of those paths which on busy days is crowded with walkers including families with children, yet a minor slip off the path could prove to be disastrous and on this occasion seems to have been. It's not always the obvious accident spots and epic scrambles that can be dangerous.

Our sympathies to the victim and her family and friends.
